“Forward Together” Project

"Forward Together” was the first project of its kind implemented in the Dominican Republic. It seeks to bring about behaviour change in relation to sexuality, sexual and reproductive health and condom use in sexual workers, their clients and the intermediaries (businesses owners and employees, taxi drivers, tourist guides, etc...), as a strategy for STD/HIV/AIDS reduction.
This project initiated in 1988 and has thus far been implemented in metropolitan Santo Domingo, La Romana, Santiago and San Pedro de Macoris. It comprises a network of female sex workers trained as health messengers and volunteers carrying out direct interventions with their peers in the field using a methodology termed “Reaching Equals through Equals”. This innovative educational approach, replicated by COIN in other countries, has two underlying principles - respect for the culture and life styles of the target groups, and empowerment, so that sex workers become the primary agents for change in structuring their own future and development.
Among other strategies employed are “Thought Provocation Theatre” staged by CSWs, and a Mobil Clinic Service which brings medical care and treatment to CSWs at the work place.
