CIMS Project

The CIMS project is an integrated program of prevention, information, support and empowerment directed at migrants, potential women travellers, and other key players in countries of origin, transit and destination. It strives to mitigate the social and economic effects of irregular migration and the trade of women. It was created by COIN in 1994 in response to the growing problem of irregular migration and the trafficking of women. The project’s hub is a drop in centre/shelter for migrant, trafficked and expulsed women that operates with a rights-based approach to provide support, training and information, legal aid, medical, psychological and social services to the target groups.

Objectives

Raise awareness both nationally and abroad, of the issues surrounding irregular migration and the trafficking of Dominican Women, and formulate policies and interventions to address these problems.

s Provide information, orientation and support services to migrant, trafficked and returned Women.

s Fight against the trafficking of women.

Services

s Health services: Low cost medical attention and laboratory facilities.

s Counselling and psychological services: e.g. violence and abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, VCT, treatment of depression.

s Legal advice and follow-up

s Social services:  e.g. employment and reinsertion programs

s Capacity building

s Telephone hot line: Over the phone assistance and information

Target Groups

s Migrant or trafficked women at home and abroad.

s Potential Migrants in communities with high migration rates susceptible to women traffickers.

s Returned women that have been victims of trafficking or physical, psychological or sexual violence, or exposed to sexual and/or economic exploitation.
